Leon Ehrenpreis (1930-2010) a Truly FUNDAMENTAL Mathematician part 6
Date: September 16, 2010 Speaker: Doron Zeilberger, Rutgers University This is a mathematical ה ס פ ד (eulogy) for my great mentor and influencer, Leon Ehrenpreis, who has made fundamental contributions to mathematics, including the seminal theorem about the existence of a Fundamental solution to any partial linear differential operator with constant coefficients and the amazing statement, and proof, of the so-called Fundamental principle. I will illustrate his beautiful ideas by presenting discrete analogs, where things get much simpler, and Leon's beautiful ideas shine out in their bare beauty, without the "continuous" distracting background noise, so no knowledge of analysis is needed to understand this talk.

Sharing Wisdom Gained from Publishing a CDF ebook
The print version of Calculus: Early Transcendentals, by Briggs, Cochran, Gillett, and Schulz, Addison-Wesley/Pearson Education, contains almost 1000 pages. The electronic version of the complete text was created from scratch as a Computable Document Format (CDF) ebook composed of 113 files, collectively containing 648 interactive figures. Navigation between any two sections of the ebook and to specific items within a section requires only two mouse clicks. The CDF ebook is distributed to thousands of students enrolled at hundreds of colleges directly from Pearson's MyMathLab website. In this video presentation from the Wolfram Technology Conference 2011, Eric Schulz, author of the CDF ebook, shares wisdom gained from the experience of designing, creating, managing, and publishing the electronic version of Calculus.

Fourier TransformationAlmost every audio amateur, who is not even a math expert, has definitely heard about the so-called Fourier transformation, FFT, DFT, etc. This transformation is the basis of spectrum analysis which forms one of the fundamental aspects of sound equalizing and synthesis. Fourier transformation is a highly mathematical phenomenon. Thus not everybody who at least once was interested in its essence could grasp it completely.We shall try to explain the essence of the method in a simple and understandable way without delving into a complicated integral calculus.DNA duplex, solar activity cycles, and complex electronic signals can be mathematically rendered as a number of wave curves. This idea forms the basis of a powerful analytical instrument called Fourier transformation. The first person to reveal this method to the world was a French mathematician Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier. Thus the transformation was called after his name.Fourier transformation happens every time when we hear a sound. Our ear does automatic calculation. Our conscious mind can do it only after several years of math studies. Our hearing organ provides transformation rendering the sound as oscillatory motion of particles of elastic medium. The motion propagates in the form of waves in gaseous, fluid, or solid environment. It propagates in the form of a spectrum of successive volume values for tones of various pitches. Quantum Computing Day 1: Introduction to Quantum Computing
Google Tech Talks December, 6 2007 ABSTRACT This tech talk series explores the enormous opportunities afforded by the emerging field of quantum computing. The exploitation of quantum phenomena not only offers tremendous speed-ups for important algorithms but may also prove key to achieving genuine synthetic intelligence. We argue that understanding higher brain function requires references to quantum mechanics as well. These talks look at the topic of quantum computing from mathematical, engineering and neurobiological perspectives, and we attempt to present the material so that the base concepts can be understood by listeners with no background in quantum physics. This first talk of the series introduces the basic concepts of quantum computing. We start by looking at the difference in describing a classical and a quantum mechanical system. The talk discusses the Turing machine in quantum mechanical terms and introduces the notion of a qubit. We study the gate model of quantum computing and look at the famous quantum algorithms of Deutsch, Grover and Shor. Finally we talk about decoherence and how it destroys superposition states which is the main obstacle to building large scale quantum computers. We clarify widely held misconceptions about decoherence and explain that environmental interaction tends to choose a basis in state space in which the system decoheres while leaving coherences in other coordinate systems intact.
